BHP is having a blast, from a distance

BHP Billiton is the first company in the world to introduce remote blasting, instead of firing underground.

The group’s Cannington Mine, Queensland has introduced the new technology which is said, among other things, to improve safety.

Remote blasting allows miners to use radio communication channels to fire explosives.

Orica Mining Services developed the system.
