THE CSIRO has completed a project through the Australian Coal Industry's Research Program (ACARP) to develop a better understanding of dragline booms.
Most operations involving dragline booms incorporate an NDT regime to ensure risks associated with in-service boom failure are properly managed.
According to the report, StressVision, a cutting-edge technology for measuring residual stresses in ferrous materials, adds value to existing NDT regimes.
StressVision is believed to reduce the risk of in-service boom failure and increase crack repair quality through a better understanding of residual stresses. It is also said to have significant replication potential for other mining applications.
The ACARP report outlines a set of specific StressVision applications to provide a better understanding of applications such as stress relief determination, fitness for purpose assessments, and validation of finite element analysis modelling.
