Drill-and-blast mines pay up with Queensland levy

THE Queensland government will charge quarrying and explosives operations a Safety and Health Levy from 1 October 2008.

The Department of Mines and Energy (DME) says the levy will boost the safety and health services provided by the Mines Inspectorate.

The department will collect nearly $19.5m from employers and contractors throughout 2008/9, which represents three quarters of the annual cost of health and safety services.

The levy will cost operations with 11 or more employees $603 for the 2008 period, which is expected to increase to $803 per employee when employment data is finalised later in 2008.

The levy for companies with 10 or fewer employees will be $75 per employee, which will rise to approximately $100.
