Liverpool Residents stand strong against BHP

RESIDENTS in the Liverpool Plains in New South Wales are standing strong in their 11th week of a blockade to prevent BHP Billiton from drilling on their land.

BHP is hoping to set up a longwall coal mine in the area, which will involve intensive exploratory drilling on farmers’ land.

Residents are concerned coal mining will have a negative impact on the environment and threaten the region’s water supply.

The blockade began after the government awarded BHP access to farmers’ land without their approval or conducting environmental studies.
