Mine collapse prompts government to buy Queensland homes

THE Queensland government has announced it will buy four more properties that were damaged after an old mine collapsed near Ipswich in 2008.

Nearly 40 homes in Collingwood Park homes sustained substantial damage and became destabilised when a disused mine under the area gave way in April 2008.

The government announced a $10m rescue package to repair the damaged houses and protect long-term property values in May 2008.

So far, ten homes have been purchased under exceptional circumstances, and nine homes because of structural damage.

While the four properties have not suffered any structural damage, Energy Minister, Geoff Wilson says the houses are “special cases”.

"There's more to our rescue package than bricks and mortar.

"People's lives have been disrupted and they need our help to get back on track,” he said.
