Mining explosive materials spill off QLD coast

A PACIFIC Adventurer ship bound for Brisbane has lost half its load of ammonium nitrate which is used as an explosive in mining and minerals processing operations.

The cargo ship spilled its load when it got into trouble in high seas caused by Cyclone Hamish.

Scientists say a chemical spill of this scale will drastically change the environment.

A spokesman from the Pacific Adventurer's owner, Swire Shipping, said the cargo was correctly stowed in line with international regulations.
