THERE are fifteen newcomers to the 2009 BRW’s Rich 200 despite the dire state of the economy.
One of the most interesting is Toowoomba-based Troy Campbell on $215 million.
Campbell owns an oil and gas services company called Easternwell. Industry officials say that the economic downturn has served mining services company’s well as many firms have outsourced to cut costs.
The company’s four drilling rigs are in hot demand from coal seam gas (CSG) explorers.
This year’s list is a clear directional indicator for the mining sector and possibly the future of the coal industry. As Australia’s emission reduction scheme seems imminent, gas is becoming a realistic way to reduce pollution compared to risky technologies such as carbon capture and storage.
