A RECENT report has revealed more women are choosing careers in mineral and energy roles.
The latest report of ‘recruitment and retention of women in non-traditional roles’ shows women make up 10 per cent of the workforce, up from six per cent in 2005.
Queensland Resources Council (QRC) CEO Michael Roche says there is “no reason” women cannot make up 50% of the mining force, and says a number of initiatives are making mining more attractive for women.
"Breastfeeding facilities, childcare support and job sharing are all areas that are starting to bear fruit in attracting women into the industry," he said.
However, Roche says there is still more work to be done to resolve gender imbalance in the industry, with women still making up only 11.3% of the total workforce.
“The resources sector has to be ready for the next upswing, and this means having sufficient skilled people to enable the industry to prosper and grow,” he said.
