New gas discovery prompts further drilling

WOODSIDE Petroleum has reported a new gas discovery near its Pluto project in the Carnarvon Basin, Western Australia.

The oil and gas producer says wireline logs indicated a gross gas column of about 110m in good quality reservoir sandstone at its Martell-1 exploration well. The company claims it is awaiting the results of pressure testing at the well.

Woodside Chief Executive Don Voelte says the operations in the Pluto area will play a critical role in meeting Asia-Pacific demand and will make a substantial contribution to Australia’s export income.

The supplier says it plans to drill further in the area in late-2009.
