QUEENSLAND Resources Council Chief Executive Michael Roche has says that removing the energy security shackles from mineral exploration and development in North West Queensland is a national interest priority.
Speaking at the launch of the Sims Review into energy supply options for North West Queensland, Roche said the growth of one of the world’s most prospective mineral provinces had been hamstrung for too long by high energy costs and the difficulties of increasing supply.
The Sims Review, commissioned by the QRC in partnership with the state government, determined that transmission links between North West Queensland the eastern seaboard’s National Electricity Market were competitive with local power generation options.
Roche says state and federal governments have benefitted from the production of more than $85 billion in mineral wealth from North West Queensland over the past 100 years and it is in the national interest to see the region realise its 21st century potential in response to increasing global minerals demand.
