Queensland Government underestimated mining slump: Union

AN Australian mining union claims the Queensland Government has underestimated the severity of the mining slump.

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) claims there are not enough jobs available in Queensland, and says the government’s attempts to solve the problem shows it “does not understand the problem”.

More than Queensland 1,000 jobs have been slashed in recent months as the economic crisis takes its hold on a number of global mining companies.

CFMEU district vice-president, Steve Pearce, says the government doesn’t fully comprehend the extent or scope of changing trends in market conditions.

“More should be done to help mine operators find other solutions to the slump… Whether that means a change of work arrangements, a change of work hours, or a combination of a number of things,” he said.

While thousands of jobs have been slashed across the globe, experts predict the mining industry will recover throughout 2009 and return to normal later in the year.
